Okay I want a new dog house but what size do I need?

There are several obvious considerations when selecting the right size house for your dog. You will need to consider the height of your dog for the door opening; they need to clear the door when they enter, however it is wise to have the entry as small as possible to help retain heat in the winter or to keep the house cooler in the summer. So if the entry is approximately three fourths of the length (shoulder to ground) of your dog they can enter comfortably. However this is a guideline you know your dog better than anyone. If your dog is elderly “ducking” (as most dogs do while entering a door) may be difficult and should be taken into consideration.

The next consideration is the width and the length for your dog, again breeds vary as does each dog. Your dog needs to be able to enter the dog house and turn around. Is your dog overweight? If so that needs to be taken into consideration. A guideline that can be used is not having the house more than 25% bigger than your dog. So if your dog is 20 inches in length (nose to flank not including tail) then you may consider a house 25 inches in length & 25 inches in width or a little larger. Again this is a guideline. If you are in a warm climate year round having the house a bit larger is not a problem. On the other hand an oversized house in a harsh winter climate is going to be hard to retain heat. If you can’t decide, or if you think your dog is in-between sizes it is wise to go to the next size larger, look at it this way if you were buying a mattress would you want your feet hanging over the end?

Next consideration is the height of the dog house. The 25% guideline applies here as well so if your dog stands 20 inches from head to toes your house should be approximately 25 inches tall or a little larger. It is not a problem if the height is more than 25% as long as it does not exceed 50% of your dog’s height.

So there you have some guidelines, if you are still confused watch your dog and the next time they are stretched out on the floor take note of the space they need to be comfortable get a tape measure and measure that area.

Dog House History - Where Did It All Begin?

I remember our first Dog as a kid; it was a ‘cross-breed’ however by appearance was mostly German Shepherd.  Of course I wanted to know everything I could about the Shepherds and even did a speech on them for school.  I guess some things never change.  My new four legged buddy is; at best guess, a cross between a Basenji and Terrier.  Curiosity got me to look up info on both breeds so I could learn a little about the breeds, some general characteristic traits, what they were bred for, and what I could expect.  Both breeds offered me inside into the dogs, how dogs were used in history and how they lived in the past too.

In Rome and Greek history small companion dogs existed just like we see people toting around with them today.  They were considered then to be status symbols and their master’s home was their home.  Almost sounds like the Celebrity trend we see in the current day with pocket sized pooches dressed in matching attire as their owners and carried in a purse tote.   On the other side there are several breeds in the ‘history of’ dogs that were original bred centuries ago as hunting dogs.  Dating back to 4500 BC in Egypt, dogs were held in high esteem as pets and hunting companions.    With large secure kennels for the dogs comfort and professional handlers to care for them.    These Kennels would house many dogs so they were constructed for the masses back then, not the single or double house we would typically see today.

Somehow this collective group kept in a kennel evolved prior to the 1800’s.  During this time dog breeders to the elite surfaced and to keep their pricey dogs the standard peaked roof dog house was the fashion at this time.   Along with breeding, competitive dog shows where dogs would be shipped in to compete in wooden crates that would also double as their homes.  Dogs used as security and messengers during the world wars were housed in the same style of vented crates as well.

Wood has been and still is the preferred material for Dog houses.  The reasons for this include that wood is readily available to most anyone, offers a solid and sturdy construction without being too expensive, great insulation properties and easy to work with.   These were all reasons to choose wood construction looking back in history and still maintains the place of preferred material today for all the same reasons.

“I love my dog house. That was great service and I believe the puppies will like it too.”
"Prompt delivery with concerned follow through. Easy to assemble, worth the price."
The dog house is absolutely fantastic! It is the perfect size for Machiavelli, and he love's it! It also was very easy to put together all by myself. I used Thompson Water Seal on the outside and the inside floor, and it produced an even richer look to the wood. Thank you very much for all your help and information in helping me find the perfect house for my best friend!
Thanks again and God Bless,
